Rossman Lake, Manitoba: I was just getting to that good part in Fishing With My Old Guy. You know, the part where the late, great Paul Quarrington starts feeling like he’s about to touch down in a place that looks exactly like a photo from Field & Stream magazine.

I read it every April in anticipation of opening day of the coming season. Just as Quarrington starts ranting about too much wind on fishing trips, I’m startled by the sudden, very close and very loud chorus to Canada Geese overhead.

Through the domed skylight of this yurt, I can see their shadows, thanks to a bright moon. And because the roof is canvas, I can hear those wing beats all night as the Canada’s herald the arrival of spring. And that’s the great thing about a yurt. Unlike camping, you sleep in a real bed. Like camping, you get to soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the great outdoors. Read more
